No matter what kind of food you're craving, you can find it in Greenville!  Let’s hit the road for my favorite local Friday night foodie “road trip”…three miles round trip and all the flavor you can handle!

Starters and Cocktails:

Our first stop is The Owl—a hidden culinary gem located on Wade Hampton Blvd.  Don’t let the fact that the restaurant is housed in what was once a national pizza chain keep you from experiencing some of the most amazing, small plate goodness in town!  Two of my faves (if I’m lucky enough to find them on their changing menu) are the Pan Seared Scallops, Sweet Potato-Chorizo Hash with Avocado Mousse and a hint of Sherry Gastrique or the Fresh Fish Stew with Green Curry, Lotus Root, and Smoked Turnips.  Everything on the menu is full of flavor and culinary inspiration!  Order up a Dark Stormy cocktail and you might just get an impromptu cover of Build Me Up Buttercup from their lively staff.  Insider’s tip:  Bring your quarters…they have Donkey Kong!

It’s main meal time!  Hop in the car and head downtown to W. Washington Street and the awaiting flavors of Belgium at The Trappe Door. Enter this unique, cozy eatery by stepping downstairs from street level.  On tap for dinner:  Belgian Beer (try a Trappist Ale), and one of their delicious Moules Frite (a pot of mussels served with fries).  My go-to is the Spanish Moule Frite with Romesco, Chorizo and Roasted Corn.  Don’t forget to order the Curry Dip for your fries!  Insider’s Tip #1:  Call ahead for reservations, but if you are just winging it on your road trip, take a seat and read through the classic comic books featuring The Adventures of TinTin, created by Belgian cartoonist, Georges Remi.  Insider Tip #2:  Walking on the wild side? Try their traditional Absinthe service!

Head north up Main Street for the most unbelievable Strawberry layered cake you’ve ever tasted crafted by Chef Tripp Yeargin at eclectic The Bohemian Café.  Fresh, local strawberries and melt-in-your-mouth cake layers are covered with a cream cheese strawberry icing…it’s the ultimate sweet treat!  Insider’s Tip: They have a fabulous Sunday Brunch, too, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, complete with an award-winning Bloody Mary bar.

THAT Something Extra:

How about some sweet dreams to end your evening?

Don’t feel like heading home after your tasty tour?   Tuck yourself into to a comfy bed at one of the hotels just off your foodie road trip route!  Try the Downtown Courtyard by Marriott, the Hampton Inn & Suites at RiverPlace, the Hyatt RegencyHoliday Inn Express Hotels & Suites Downtown or my favorite…the Westin Poinsett!
