Artsy adventures abound here in Greenville! Check out some of the ways my family likes to fill our weekends with art-tastic fun:
Be inspired by the amazing collection at the Greenville County Museum of Art! The whole family will have fun discovering many different types of art, as well as seeing works by two world-famous artists...Jasper Johns and Andrew Wyeth. Kids will really like learning about potter, David Drake (an artist, poet and former slave), and seeing artwork from the Caldecott Medal-winning picture book about his life, Dave the Potter. Insider's Tip: Admission to the museum is free, and if you've got a group of 10 or more, schedule a guided tour two weeks in advance for a really neat experience!
Share a super Saturday of art exploration at the Museum & Gallery at Heritage Green. At this satellite of the Museum & Gallery at Bob Jones University, kids will love visiting the second floor, where they can dress up, read in a tree house and learn through hands-on exhibits. Insider's Tip: Children 12 and under can explore for free. Also, be sure to go on one of the "gallery scavenger hunts" and try some of the other fun activities, too!
Give the kiddos an intro into the dramatic arts by taking them to a matinee at the SC Children's Theater! These fun productions will inspire audiences of all ages. Matinees usually take the stage around 1:30 PM on Sundays, but visit the Theater's website for specific plays and start times. Insider's Tip: Check out the SCCT's "2nd Stage Productions" for lesser-known play performances at family-friendly prices!
THAT Something Extra:
How about making a little art of your own?
Unleash your creativity at one of the many art classes offered throughout Greenville County. Furman University's "Learning for You" program offers youth and adult classes at venues around the county in painting, photography, dancing, piano and more. For some "wearable art," try a jewelry-making class at The Beaded Frog.
Step back in time...just for the day.
Learn more about the cities and towns of Greenville County by day-tripping around to their individual history museums! Must-see stops include the Fountain Inn History Center, History Museum of Travelers Rest, and the Greer Heritage Museum.
