To start our weekend off on a tasty note, we hop in the car and head downtown for dinner together at Sassafras Southern Bistro-the finest southern cuisine in town with a family-friendly atmosphere! My wife and I like to start with a nice bottle of J. Lohr Merlot, which pairs perfectly with Sassafras' homemade spicy Pimento Cheese Fondue. Then, my whole crew orders the Sassafras Fried Chicken (fried and stuffed with country ham, spinach, Parmesan cheese with a sweet country ham and onion gravy served over mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach)! Insider's Tip: If you're up for saving some cash and trying new things during the week, check out Sassafras' "Wine Wednesdays," where they offer 50% off all bottles of wine...all night!
Finish the evening with leisurely walk down Main Street together towards a simple but splendid dessert at Spill the Beans. A chocolate and peanut butter waffle cone and a Mama Mia Amore coffee are the kinds of food that satisfy the soul.
Saturday Morning into Early Afternoon:
I start my Saturday early with my favorite four-legged family member! Our dog, Scout, and I head back downtown and pick up the Swamp Rabbit Trail at Linky Stone Park for a peaceful 10-mile run along the Reedy River. We always encounter friendly faces along the way! Insider's Tip: If you want a serious weekend workout, join the 8:30 AM group ride at Carolina Triathlon and take on Paris Mountain for a 30-mile loop!
After my quality time with Scout, I like to stop at Planet Smoothie for a "Chocolate Chimp" (with cocoa and bananas) protein smoothie to recover. Then, I meet up with my awesome family for lunch at The Carolina Drive-In for the best onion rings in town!
Saturday Afternoon into Evening:We love to spend quality time volunteering together as a family. It's our opportunity to give back to the community that gives so much to us. There are so many amazing organizations in Greenville that offer ways to get involved, but my family enjoys spending an afternoon helping out at the Triune Mercy Center. Insider's Tip: Did you know that in June of 2013, Volunteer America named Greenville #4 among mid-sized U.S. cities for volunteerism? There are so many ways to help our great community...just pick your passion and go!
We love to end a fabulous day together with a picnic at Falls Park. It's easy to do after a quick stop by Zoe's Kitchen for tasty Southern sandwiches with a Mediterranean twist (and their fabulous roasted fresh vegetables!). A picnic in the park is always fun, but it's even better when The Upstate Shakespeare Festival is presenting their annual plays. An evening by the waterfall with a blanket and live entertainment is hard to beat!
Sunday Morning:On Sundays, we love to spend time with our church family! We attend St. Matthew UMC, where I play drums and my son plays guitar in the contemporary worship service. Afterwards, for lunch, we head to Como's Pete's #4 for their famous cheeseburgers and some social time with the neighborhood regulars! Insider's Tip: Ask for "Half & Half" when you order a burger, hot dog or sandwich plate at Como's. You'll get fries AND onion rings...the best of both worlds!
Sunday Afternoon:After a nice nap, it's time to work off lunch and exercise together at The Caine Halter Family YMCA. Between the fitness classes, pool and weight room, there's something for every member of the family. We think the Caine Halter Family YMCA is arguably the finest fitness facility in Greenville!
Our "Family is Everything" weekend is complete by sharing a delicious dinner at the greatest place on earth...the deck of our home in the beautiful Greenville weather!
THAT Something Extra:
Cheer on our hometown teams!
Another fun way to spend quality time together is to attend a game of one of the professional sports teams that call Greenville home. Chill out with the Greenville Road Warriors Hockeyteam, or hit a home run with the Greenville Drive. Either way, it's fun for the whole family!
