Salley Mavor: Social Fabric

Storytelling weaves together characters, plots, and twists, but the narratives revealed in Salley Mavor: Social Fabric offer a three-dimensional flair to stories assembled on backdrops all stitched by hand.

Award-winning fiber artist Salley Mavor has honed her skills over four decades while developing a signature style and working methods. Using a needle as her tool, thread as her medium, and stitches as her marks, she has carved out a niche in the fiber art community and the children’s book world, as many of her distinctive blends of materials and techniques have been used to illustrate 11 picture books.

On display through September 4, 2021, Social Fabric is a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the detail and three-dimensional quality of these impressive displays of sculptural needlework that showcase miniature worlds full of characters, props and scenery. They are made using an assortment of materials, including fabric, beads, wire and found objects which she has embroidered, wrapped and bound together with hand-stitching techniques developed through years of experimentation.

Social Fabric features of a variety of pieces Mavor has made over the past 20 years that interpret the theme of social connectivity. These works explore cultural diversity, migration, fashion, the natural world, and a range of social narratives from the everyday to topical subjects.

Presented in shadowbox frames filled with distinctive blends of materials and hand-stitching techniques, this exhibition underscores the irony, tragedy, and beauty of humanity as it “unravels and mends throughout history.” Mavor hopes visitors will find much to connect with in personal and meaningful ways, while examining the intricacies of these narratives.
