Greenville Area Health Systems

While we wish you good health always, we’ve got healthcare that is worth bragging about. Together, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Bon Secours Mercy Health, and Prisma Health (our three main health systems) provide experts in every specialty along with emergency and exigent care. Stay well, but if you need it, we’ve got you covered.

Shriners Hospitals for Children - Greenville is one of 22 hospitals internationally that devotes itself to improving the lives of children. Specifically, the Greenville facility is dedicated to caring for children with orthopaedic and neuromuscular conditions. From the day it opened its doors in Greenville in 1927, the Shriners Hospital has drawn a large number of children and their families from across the Southeast. (The hospital's service area is SC, NC, GA, TN, VA, AL, and surrounding areas.) Today, the 50-bed facility is a colorful, fun and welcoming environment for healing children. Located near the medical campus of Prisma Health's Greenville Memorial Hospital, Shriners features two operating rooms, 15 outpatient exam rooms, an in-house Prosthetics and Orthotics Department, a motion analysis center, Physical, Occupational, and Recreational Therapy Departments, a KidZone (complete with pool tables, video games, and air hockey tables), and a handicap-accessible playground. 950 W Faris Rd; 864.271.3444.

With a ministry first established in the 1800s by the Sisters of Bons Secours, Bon Secours Mercy Health, as it's known today, first began in Greenville in 1932 as St. Francis Hospital, a private, not-for-profit hospital. In 2000, the health system became Bon Secours St. Francis Health System and in 2018,  the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System and Mercy Health merged to become the United States’ fifth-largest Catholic healthcare ministry, one of the nation’s 20 largest healthcare systems, and the largest private provider in Ireland. BSMH has more than 1,000 sites of care, 50 hospitals, and 60,000+ employees.

Bon Secours Mercy Health extends the compassionate ministry of Jesus Christ by improving the health and well-being of surrounding communities and brings good help to those in need, especially people who are poor, dying, and underserved. If the French name sounds familiar (translation: Good Help), it’s because the health system is also the naming sponsor of the city’s major arena—the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Today, Bon Secours operates inpatient hospitals, medical groups, cancer centers, surgical centers, urgent care locations, and more across the area that can help keep you healthy whether you are a permanent resident or if you're just visiting.

Prisma Health is the area’s oldest and the State of South Carolina's largest healthcare provider. City Hospital first opened in 1912, changed its name to Greenville General Hospital in 1935, and was remade into an entire hospital system to serve Greenville County in 1947—one of the nation's first hospital systems. The name changed to Greenville Hospital System in 1966 and the primary facility, Greenville Memorial Hospital, was built in 1972; by 1982, it was expanded to become the state's largest acute care hospital. The name changed again in 2013 to Greenville Health System (also known as GHS and what many native Greenvillians still refer to it as today) and they merged with Palmetto Health in 2019, changing the name once more to Prisma Health.

Today, Prisma has eight medical campuses, six hospitals (including the area's only Pediatric ER), wellness, birthing, urgent care, and outpatient facilities. From preventive medicine and routine procedures to emergency and acute care to wellness education and complex surgeries, Prisma offers a full range of services to the entire state. Additionally, Prisma Health is the naming sponsor of the area's rails-to-trails initiative, the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile long multi-use greenway that is very popular with both residents and visitors!
