Greenville County Museum of Art

The GCMA is home to a nationally acclaimed collection of American art, including major holdings by two of the nation’s greatest artists, Andrew Wyeth and Jasper Johns. Andrew Wyeth: The Greenville Collection is now the largest and most complete collection of Wyeth watercolors owned by any public museum in the world. The GCMA owns an extensive collection of prints and paintings by America's most renowned contemporary artist, Jasper Johns, who grew up in South Carolina.

Housed in a modern building named as one of the most interesting in the Upstate by the American Association of Architects, the GCMA permanent collection explores the breadth of American art through the Southern experience from the colonial era to the present. Among the highlights of the Southern Collection are an exceptional group of pre-Civil War vessels created by the enslaved African-American potter and poet David Drake, an extensive collection of American Impressionism, more than 20 works by William H. Johnson, and an array of works by such twentieth-century masters as Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Romare Bearden, and Andy Warhol.

See the GCMA website (gcma.org) for a schedule of exhibitions and events, including the entertaining and educational series, Sundays at 2. Open Wednesday—Saturday, 10 am—6 pm, Sundays 1 pm—5 pm. Closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and major holidays. Admission is always free.
