Do I need a boating license to rent a boat?
In South Carolina, you do not need a boating license to rent a boat if you were born prior to July 1, 2007. Boaters born after July 1, 2007, are required by law to pass an approved boater education course before operating a boat, personal watercraft, or a specialty propcraft powered by a 10-hp motor or more. For more information, visit the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources website.
What types of boats are available to rent?
Available rentals will vary per lake and outfitter. Depending on the location, you may be able to rent:
• Pontoons and tritoons
• Kayaks and canoes
• Paddleboards (SUPs)
Can I book a guided lake tour?
Yes, though availability depends on the lake. For those interested in guided experiences, several outfitters offer tours on nearby lakes:
One of the most popular destinations for guided lake tours is Lake Jocassee. Known for its immersive experiences and unmatched natural beauty, Lake Jocassee sits within the Jocassee Gorges at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's a favorite for those looking to explore waterfalls, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters—all by boat.

Are there restrictions on where I can boat?
Each lake has its own rules and regulations regarding motorized vs. non-motorized boats, speed limits, and no-wake zones. Be sure to check the rules for the specific lake you're visiting before heading out.
Where can I go fishing, and do I need a license?
Fishing is welcome on most Upstate lakes—popular spots include Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, Lake Robinson, and especially Lake Jocassee, renowned for its clear mountain water and its incredible bass fishery (state‑record spotted, redeye, and smallmouth bass have all come from Jocassee). For shore‐access points, ramps, and piers, the South Carolina Public Fishing Access site is your best planning tool.
License requirements
Anyone 16 years or older must carry a valid South Carolina freshwater fishing license whether you fish from boat, bank, or pier. Short‑term (3‑ or 14‑day) and annual licenses are sold online through SCDNR, tackle shops, and local retailers.
Guided trips
• Jocassee Lake Tours – Fishing Adventures, Jocassee Charters, and Blue Ridge Guide Service run year‑round trout‑and‑bass outings on Lake Jocassee, providing all tackle and covering your license under the captain’s blanket permit.
• Lake Hartwell – Several independent guides operate out of Lake Hartwell’s marinas for striped‑bass and catfish action—see our Boat Rentals and Outfitters Directory for more info.
Before you cast, take a moment to review current size and daily catching limits for area fish species on the SCDNR website, then head to the water—Greenville’s lakes offer everything from quiet trout trolling to high‑energy Hartwell striped bass runs.
Are there marinas or public boat ramps where I can launch my own boat?
Yes, many lakes have public boat ramps and marinas where you can launch your personal watercraft. Use our map tool above of lake access points to plan your launch spot. Some may require a small access fee or have specific hours, so be sure to call ahead for pricing and hours.
What should I bring for a day on the lake?
We recommend bringing sun protection (like sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats), plenty of water and snacks, waterproof phone cases or valuables bag, life jackets (some may be provided with your watercraft rentals), fishing gear, and a dry bag. Don't forget to pack out what you bring in and avoid leaving trash or other items behind. If you plan to bring your pets along, be sure to check each state park and boat rental provider for pet-specific rules.
Can I bring my pet on a rented boat?
Rental companies may allow pets on certain types of watercraft, while others may restrict pets. It's best to check with the rental spot or outfitter in advance to confirm their pet policy. We suggest checking pet rules at any state parks or lake access points to make sure your furry friend is allowed before going.
